Having fought a difficult battle with my weight for over twenty years, I know that countless times I promised myself that I would start to make changes…tomorrow. It always seemed that I was forever gearing up for some new diet or exercise program that I would start bright and early Monday morning. But, today? Well, today I needed to have one more big “hurrah” because tomorrow I would have to follow a healthy lifestyle. I have literally spent years of my life getting ready to make a change. What if instead, I had just said, “Hey, enough of this! I’m going to start right now. Nope, no more procrastinating for me! Slim and Trim, here I come!”
The reality is that the stars are never going to perfectly align. There is always going to be a celebration, a tragedy, a holiday, a busy week at work, a sick child…basically anything that can provide the perfect excuse to put off making the changes we know we need to make. I have watched many successful people lose the weight and keep it off. One thing they all have in common is that they gave up the “wait” and went to “work!” The amazing thing is that as soon as you stop making excuses, you will start to make progress.
Becoming a truly healthy, lean person, means that you have accepted that the principles of good health are not something you live for a few weeks and then abandon when the latest “excuse” arrives. Seeing your body as the gift it truly is, and committing to treating it with the respect and care it deserves, will take you away from the fads and into the fabulous. If you are under a great deal of stress, if you are experiencing a loss, has there ever been a more important time to take good care of yourself? If you are celebrating, how about celebrating by reaching for the things that add more life and energy, instead of the things that just make you feel sick and disgusted with yourself afterward? And, by all means, instead of saying tomorrow, go get a big glass of water, lace up your tennis shoes, and let’s get moving TODAY!
